General Writing Sample
Many serial dramas on TV ( e.g. ‘soap operas’ or ‘sopas’) play an important social role.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Tips
Read the question carefully and highlight what you need to do. Sometimes there will be only one thing you need to do e.g. ‘To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?’ In this case, it is important to state very clearly if you agree, disagree or both and give lots of reasons supporting your position. Sometimes there will be 2, even 3 parts to the question e.g. ‘Discuss both these points of view and give your own opinion.’ In these cases, the most obvious approach would be to devote one paragraph to each of the 3 points equally.
다음은 IELTS Band 7 정도 실력의 예제입니다. 전체적으로 의견을 뒷받침하는 논거가 분명하게 명시되었으며, 결론도출도 자연스럽게 잘 이루어진 글입니다. 다양한 단어를 사용하였으며, 동시에 부자연스러운 문장이나 표현이 적은 점이 좋은 점수를 도출하는 이유 중 하나입니다. 좀 더 적절한 문단나누기가 되었으면 하는 아쉬움이 있으나, 대체적으로 잘 쓴 글입니다.
Band 7이란? 부정확하거나 부적절한 언어를 사용하거나 일부 상황에서는 오해를 하는 경우가 있지만, 그래도 충분한 언어구사능력이 있다고 여겨질 경우 받게 되는 점수입니다. 일반적으로 난이도가 높은 언어를 잘 구사하며 자세한 내용에 대한 이해가 가능한 영어 실력입니다.
Sample Answer
In Korea, most families have a television and nowadays their favourite programme of each and everybody are soap operas which we can be exposed at every moment.
These plays have a different impact on different people. Our elderly population enjoy the Korean soap operas very much as they tend to be subjected on ways of life and cultures. These plays are also replacing their past time for the old people. But they do have an impact on them, all these ‘soaps’ have the tendency of showing new youngsters respect and love their parents or grand parents whereas in the reality this is not so. These kind of descriptions do sometimes lead to conflicts, misunderstandings or event suicide in some rare cases, as our older generation are very sensitive and soft hearted.
The second age group which these serial dramas affect to are the children and teenagers. All this age, they let themselves be influenced by anything. They do not know how to discriminate between what is good and bad in the society. They act just as the heroes and heroines of these plays. Sometimes, they can be violent, aggressive and the very next moment they are well behaved and nice persons.
I would also like to add that these ‘soaps’ prevent many people from having a social life and children from learning. They are diffused throughout the day and people neglect everything else around them to watch these.
All these drams give a false impression of life. They are exaggerated. But they provide a very easy way of relation and to spend time with one’s family.
So finally, I would agree that many social drams do have a social role but not in all cases. Some of them are very down to earth and realistic. They show the bardships of life and help the population to protect itself and be prepared for what is in the future. There is a group of people whose life are not affected by these soaps and they still lead a happy and peaceful life.
